Digital Na'Vi by zypherax Digital Na'Vi by zypherax
allright, finaly, here is my first digital rendering of my Na'Vi redesign.

for those of you who don't know, I have taken it uppon myself to redesign the boring humanoids of the moon Pandora in the film AVATAR. I attempted to add atributes of the native pandoran fauna as well as incorperating my own style into the design. I am still rather new to digital painting, and this is certianly the most colorfull Image I have created as of yet.

this image depicts a unclothed male na'vi. I have yet to design the colothing of these native pandorans, although you can expect some sketches and full digital renderings in the forseeable future... the spear you see here is simply a plaecholder, as I have yet to design the weaponry as well.

I am quite bad at drawing vegitation, so... well, I shall improve at some point.

Great Design!

The movie would of certainly been so much more improved if they didn't go with the lazy cat people design, a design that totally out of place with the rest of Pandora from a evolutionary standpoint.

Its too bad that most people would of had less sympathy for the Na'Vi if they had a more unique design, it should be quite obvious why the makers of the film went with the Rubber-Forehead Alien approach.

Have you ever heard of Red Letter Media by the way?

Interesting design. Much better than the awfully humanoid and four-limbed version in the movie. Certainly more consistent with the six-limb morphological standards of Pandora. One thing, though—it doesn't seem to have eyes; how does it see then? Or does it rely on another sense in the place of sight?

if I recall correctly, I had them sensing the world through the neural connection with the forest and whatnot... I think it is further explained in one of my other uploads regarding them.

Its just that it is essential to the films plot, because if Jake or James or whatever didnt feel sexually attracted to pretty blue cat alien....would he have helped them?
This is why the film sucked, bloody shitty ass plot.

Though I haven’t seen the movie (don’t know if I ever want to) I saw the design of the Navis and this redesign of yours of them is a billion times better then they’re original design (even if you aren’t quite happy with this redesign.)
Also why are the teeth of this creature black (and are the teeth only black but the rest of its skeleton is white)? This always fascinated me. Do its bones contain some sort of mineral that colors them that way or is its skeleton not even based on calcium but on a different mineral/metal?

While I do greatly appreciate the meticulous illustration of this creature, I am having some problems with the anatomy of the limbs. Creatures that spend a large amount of time in the trees are more loose-limbed, and better equipped to reach out in all directions to grab a branch and swing on it. The limbs on your Na'Vi are oriented and muscled in such a way suggestive of a terrestrial running creature, like a dog.

Sorry to be a bother, but this redesign is not relatable to a human. That's one of the reasons that the Na'vi were originally designed as humanoid, to be more relatable. Besides, it isn't IMPOSSIBLE for a humanoid to develop on an alien planet, even though the rest of the fauna looks nothing like them or vice versa. Besides, there is a simian species, Prolemuris, that makes that evolutionary path more plausible.

I admit, it's good artwork, but it doesn't have the relatability that the original Na'vi have.

No relatability? That's a pretty closed-minded thing to say. I, for one, would DEFINITELY see a movie with this creature as the hero, and I'm sure there are plenty of other people who also would. It's happened before; the Prawns in District 9 were essentially 6-foot-tall lobsters, WALL-E made us empathize with a sentient trash compactor, and 2001: A Space Odyssey didn't even show the aliens.

do not apologise, you bring up a valid point, although I think you may have missed the point of the redesign. I understand that the humanoid design was meant to allow humans to relate and to be attracted to the protagonists of the film, and I am well aware of the prolemuris 'solution'.

I stand by my opinion, that the evolution of humanoid aliens on other planets is a highly unlikley secenario, especially when many of the features they have share no commonality with the native fauna of their home world.

this was a design meant to better integrate the Na'Vi into the morphological system of Pandora, and, honnestley, any inability you may have to relate to another living being just because it is not humanoid is one of the aspects of humanity that I hope is done away with before we do make contact with any actual alien race.

thank you for the compliment,I respect your opinion, and understand your viewpoint. you simply seem to have skipped over the main reason I created this; I do not want to watch a film about cuddly humanoid aliens froliking about and mating with humans, for once, I would like to see a film that attempts to convey interspecies relations as they might actually occur.

I, too, respect your opinion, and I feel that we may not encounter life forms like ourselves in the nearer future, but it is not possible to believe that we are the only humanoid species in the universe. Not all of the aliens that I have conceived look human-like, but there are still some that I conceived that are more like humans. This Na'vi version here shows imagination that I wouldn't have been able to conceive, or draw in such detail.

This redesign, I feel, aesthetically looks like it is native to Pandora, but it makes them look more savage and would this have gone into the movie in place, it would've made the humans jump to conclusions quicker and make them more willing to kill them than they already were in the movie. Regardless, it looks like it fits more into the environment, and I commend you on that.

Personally, I'd take relatability over aesthetics, but still, I feel that you've done a good job on this redesign. I just wouldn't want it being waved in Jim Cameron's face any time soon.

I do not know... perhaps you should ask wayne barlowe to redesign them as he would have without cameron's instruction!

no, I was new to digital when I drew this last year, using corel painter essentials. I had began using Photoshop CS5 for a few months this year, but I have since abandoned digital for traditional paint, which I now prefer.

good, I shall go see them!

well, I meant, it would be awesome to see barlowe design the anmals of 'AVATAR' as he would if he was not restricted bt Cameron's 'vision', not that he should redesign the creatures of Darwin IV (because I am quite fond of those, despite the fact that they do not form a cohesive evolutionary liniage.)

you did know barlowe was a concept artist for 'AVATAR', yes?

Yes, a bit....well, everyone likes Darwinian life, me too. However, yes, the Na'vi did need a lot of redisigning.
Cameron had stated they had to look appealing, especially the females. They don't even need breasts or all that paraphernalia!

In fact, I went a bit too far with alien-isms once too, right? I had made up a sort of dragonish ocean animal which was....1000 FEET LONG!!!! And it could walk on land and breathe fire by way of combustible gases. It was a tetrapod, and it was an ancient concept for my own world, Isis Gamma. I've put up a pic of some Isians I dream of nowadays as my vision increased.

Anyhows, the thousand-footer and Isis....were made when I wa sin sixth or seventh grade....

Wow ... you quiet completely stole the idea form my head. I rewatched AVATAR with my nephew just a few days ago, and it suddenly hit me that one of the many, many things I didn't care for about it was not just that the aliens were blue cat girls, a-la any anime ever, but that they didn't mesh with the six limbed inhabitants of Pandora, with their elaborate frills, crests and so forth. In fact, I could not for the life of me think of a single, solitary way that such cat creatures could ever evolve from the fauna of Pandora.

I am very pleased that I decided to do a quick internet search for 'na'vi redesigned', as your creature is much more plausible. And interesting, I for one would love the chance to study these beauties, much more than the cat people.

Oh, and I certainly feel the film would have worked much better if this, or something equally inhuman where the dominant Pandoran life. Such a truly alien creature would have been hard to empathize with for the audience, thus I for one would have better understood the hatred some of the humans bore them. It's very hideous, unlike the oh-so-cute kitties, who you just want to love immediately. And the revelation that they were so very intelligent, so very empathetic, and Jake's eventual switch to their side would have had a greater impact, for me at least. A message of TRULY accepting intelligent life, regardless of looks. And, it would have made for no possibility even of the boring, romantic subplot. Unless Cameron finds monsters as sexy as cat-girls.

Hmm ... I think I may have just unwittingly described District 9. And rambled a lot. Oh well, nice picture.

I think you have made very good job here. This Na'Vi is much more interesting and less ridiculous than Na'Vi from the film. Avatar is beautiful movie (from 'graphic' side) but has strange, even bizzare creatures, which for some reason lost their another couple eyes and arms, and which are far to similar to us, humans.
Your creature is simply more appealing to me.
However I must ask why it has 'armour plates' on the back? And why, if we assume that Na'Vi are living on trees, it looks so heavy (like 150-200 kg). You did that for some reason?
Also think you done the picture really good, even if you are complaining that you are new to digital painting.
Reply
:iconzypherax:
zypherax Featured By Owner Nov 20, 2010  Student General Artist
that was the general idea! XD

the 'armor plates' were meant to be reminicent of the sort of chintinous material that covers most of the other pandoran creatures as well, although it did not come out very well in this version. pandora has a lower gravity than earth, so the weight would not be so much of an issue.

well, at this point, I was really new to digital painting (and I still am to some extent), so it is not nearly as good as the work some people can produce.
